New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge
Supercomputing: Pushing the limits of "standard" computing du jour.

Concept of the Program

It is a widely accepted fact that in order for our country to continue as the world-wide leader in research and innovation, we must instill in our youth an interest and excitement in science and mathematics. Given the vast resources that exist in this state in these disciplines, a way must be found to tap these resources to the benefit of our educational system. The New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge is one such program.

The main goals of the Challenge are to foster creativity in devising computational solutions to original scientific problems and to make a positive difference in students' lives, motivating them to prepare themselves for the workforce of the future. The program emphasis will naturally direct students toward a greater understanding of the scientific process and hopefully inspire career choices in mathematics, science, and engineering.

Middle and High schools are invited to form teams of students under the guidance of a teacher to solve original scientific problems by using the Internet to connect to the supercomputers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. Training and support will be available on many levels to assist the students and their teachers. Near the end of the Challenge year, scholarships, awards, savings bonds and computer equipment will be awarded as determined by a panel of judges.

This exciting program will offer a truly unique experience to students in the state. The opportunity to work on the most powerful computers in the world is currently available to only a very few students in the entire country but in New Mexico, we intend to make it just another one of the benefits of living in the "Land of Enchantment."

While this program is administered at minimal cost to the school, certain rules of participation do apply. Please read them carefully.
